Warrnambool Wildlife Encounters: A Must-Do for your Romantic Getaway in Victoria.

Turn your weekend escape in Victoria into something truly special.

Whether you’re looking for:

  • Zoos in Victoria

  • Wildlife experiences near the Great Ocean Road

  • Close encounters with Australian animals

  • A unique local attraction near Warrnambool

This is it.

At the Warrnambool Wildlife Experience staff love their native animals including this wombat.

The owners and staff at the Warrnambool Wildlife Experience clearly all love their inhabitants and the place they have created.

Just a short drive from town, Warrnambool Wildlife Encounters offers one of the most interactive native animal experiences in Victoria. This is not a traditional zoo where you peer through fences and read signs from a distance. This is wildlife, with kangaroos and koalas, the way you hope it will be — close, hands-on, relaxed, and surprisingly personal.

Sometimes it takes visitors from outside your region to remind you of the gems in your own backyard. After hearing several of our lovely guests at The Landing mention this experience being on their must-do list, we couldn’t ignore the hint. One guest even chose to visit Warrnambool solely based on the reviews. If you’re dreaming up your own romantic escape, you might also enjoy exploring our blog about Escaping to Romantic Getaways Across the Region. As for this experience, we decided that was reason enough to go — and we were absolutely not disappointed.

What Makes It Special

Unlike larger wildlife parks where animals remain behind enclosures or are viewed from a distance, your visit here is guided by friendly, passionate staff who clearly love what they do. They happily share their extensive knowledge, answer every imaginable question, and introduce visitors to a range of native animals in a calm, engaging way.

During our visit, we held snakes, met a squirrel glider up close (who treated humans like monkey bars on the way to the nearest branch), and watched as a wombat casually wandered past in search of a comfortable sleeping spot. An owl flew silently overhead from one staff member to the next in pursuit of the next treat.

When we headed outside with a feed bucket in hand, we were greeted by kangaroos, emus, and a lively menagerie of curious, cheeky characters. Some were gentle, some were indifferent, and a few were delightfully greedy — more than willing to attempt a bucket heist if given the chance.

Overall, we were genuinely impressed. The experience lasted about two hours, yet it felt unhurried. We left feeling like we had just chanced upon a little-known gem.

Please consider supporting this fantastic local wildlife park by booking a visit. What they are doing is truly special, and it is exactly the kind of experience that makes regional travel so memorable.

Extend Your Wildlife Adventure

If you’re keen for even more wildlife encounters, you’re only a short drive from Tower Hill Wildlife Reserve. This state-run nature park is set within a dormant volcano

Wildlife sightings here are common. I can almost guarantee you’ll spot an emu and koalas near the building designed by Robin Boyd at the centre of the reserve. There is a picnic area if you want to take a packed lunch and dine with the animals.  Kangaroos are frequently seen, and if you take one of the walking tracks, you may encounter some of the park’s more elusive residents.

The lake area is also home to abundant birdlife, making Tower Hill a peaceful and rewarding experience for nature lovers.

View the native animals roam free including Wallabies, Kangaroos, Koalas and Emus at Tower Hill Wildlife Reserve.

What time of day should you go?

The best time of day to see kangaroos and wallabies is dawn or dusk.

The emus will be at the picnic area to help you eat lunch
